History
At a meeting of the Major League season 2011/12, it was decided to establish in the VHL the traditional “Russian Classics” - a game of the regular championship of the Major Hockey League in the open air. It was believed that all leagues of the KHL system have their own “calling card” - “ KHL Stars Match ”, “ MHL Challenge Cup ”. In the Major Hockey League, the main event of the season was the game in the open air.
The first “Russian Classics of the VHL” was hosted on February 17, 2012 by the Central Stadium in Krasnoyarsk . The match was between the teams Sokol Krasnoyarsk and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl . All proceeds from the match went to the fund to help families of victims of the plane crash that happened with Lokomotiv . The day before, a game was played by the government of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and representatives of the VHL. At the Russian Classic match, a record was set for the VHL attendance - 16,100 spectators. The match ended with the victory of Lokomotiv 3: 2. 5 times matches ended in regular time (2012, 2014, 2015 2017 and January 2018), 1 time in extra time (2016) and once in a series of shootouts (December 2018).
