Two teams from Poland, Russia, the United States, Great Britain, Slovenia, South Korea and Bulgaria are announced (one from Moscow and one from St. Petersburg from Russia), but in the year when the Olympics are held in a certain country, this country has the right state an additional command. Thus, in particular, in 2004 , when the competition was held in Moscow , another team from Tula was announced from Russia; in 2007 , during the Olympiad in St. Petersburg, there were two teams from this city, and in 2003, Bulgaria , which hosted the Olympiad, announced the third mini-team of one person (while the usual number of team members is four).
Participants from Bulgaria , the United Kingdom , Ireland , Spain , the Netherlands , Poland , Russia , Serbia , the USA , Ukraine , Sweden , and Estonia are selected based on the results of the linguistic competitions in these countries. Others are selected from students of any educational institutions, or according to the results of non-linguistic Olympiads.
Competition
The competition consists of two parts - personal and team.
Personal competition is held first. In it, each participant is invited to solve five linguistic problems and hand over their solutions on paper. Six hours are allotted to the decision. All tasks are translated into the native language of each participant, and therefore are designed in such a way that they are equally difficult for speakers of different languages and, if possible, do not capture languages that any participants may know. Each task is subsequently evaluated by a certain number of points from 0 to 20 in increments of one tenth of a point.
Team competition, with the exception of the first Olympiad, consists of solving only one complex and extraordinary linguistic problem. The passed decision is evaluated by the jury according to a certain system, after which three (or more) winning teams are identified, receiving awards for first, second and third places, respectively.
