Biography
Initially, she studied music with her mother - pianist, composer and conductor Iris du Pré , then at the London Cello School and at the Guildhall School of Music with William Plate . She attended workshops by Paul Tortelier , Pablo Casals , Mstislav Rostropovich . She made her debut in 1962, playing with the BBC Symphony Orchestra the cello concert of Edward Elgar , which she later performed many times with different orchestras and conductors - John Barbirolli , Antal Dorati .
In 1967, she married Israeli pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim , with whom she performed many times. Her instrument in those years was the Stradivarius cello , which once belonged to K. Yu. Davydov . She played with the best orchestras in Europe and the USA under the direction of Adrian Boult , Zubin Meta , Leonard Bernstein and others, brilliantly performing I.S. Bach , Handel , Haydn , Beethoven , Schumann , Brahms , Dvorak , Richard Strauss , Britten , Elgar .
Since 1971, she began to experience health problems, in 1973, doctors diagnosed her with multiple sclerosis . She could not play anymore and after 1973 she did not perform on stage, did not record disks.
Recognition
Several documentaries were shot about Jacqueline du Pres, for example, “Remembering Jacqueline du Pres” ( 1994 ), as well as the feature film “ Hilary and Jackie ” ( 1998 ), which caused a controversial reaction to the cellist’s private life [1] . One of the varieties of roses [2] and clematis is named after du Pre.
Inducted into the Gramophone Magazine Hall of Fame [3] .
