It consists of three basalt cones and associated lava flows. The volcano is located in East Africa, in the extreme east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the center of the western branch of the Great Rift Valley , near the border with Rwanda . It lies west of the southwest end of Lake Kivu . Nearby is the city of Bukavu .
