Integrin alpha-5 (α5, CD49e ) is a membrane protein , a glycoprotein from the superfamily of integrins , a product of the ITGA5 gene, alpha-subunit of integrin α5β1 ( VLA-5 ), one of the main receptors of fibronectin . It plays a role in intercellular interactions.

Functions
Integrin alpha-5 / beta-1 (α5β1, English very late antigen-5 , VLA-5 ) is a receptor for fibronectin and fibrinogen . Recognizes the specific amino acid sequence of glycine-proline-arginine (RGD) in a wide range of ligands. During HIV infection, interaction with the viral Tat peptide enhances angiogenesis in Kaposi’s sarcoma [1] .
It interacts with intracellular proteins HPS5 , NISCH , as well as with RAB21 and COMP. Binds to Tat peptide of HIV-1 virus.
Structure
Integrin alpha-5 is a large protein, consists of 1008 amino acids , the molecular weight of the protein part is 114.5 kDa . The N-terminal portion (954 amino acids) is extracellular, then there is a single transmembrane fragment and a short intracellular fragment (28 amino acids). The extracellular fragment includes 7 FG-GAP repeats, SG1 motif involved in the interaction with chondroitin sulfates, and from 5 to 15 N-glycosylation sites . The cytosolic region includes the GFFKR motif and the HPS5 binding region.
In the process of limited proteolysis, the intramolecular bond is hydrolyzed and a heavy and light chain linked by a disulfide bond are formed .
