Oilfish [1] [2] ( lat. Pholidae ) - a family of marine ray-finned fish from the order of perciform . They are found in the northern parts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans [2] .

Content
Description
Small fish with elongated and highly laterally compressed body, covered with small scales. They have a very diverse and varying body color. The lateral line is partially developed (sometimes absent) and is represented on the body only by the median branch, consisting of openly seismic-sensing kidneys. The dorsal fin is long (75-100 spiny rays), the head is small without leathery appendages and crests, the mouth is oblique, the pectoral and ventral fins are underdeveloped; in some species, for example, in legless butterflies, ventral fins are absent. Littoral fish live in shallow coastal waters. The number of vertebrae: 80-107. Ribs are missing. [2] [3]
