Young years

Iosif Ivanovich Geibo was born on April 25, 1910 in the village of Valuyskoye, Lugansk yurt, Don region, Troops of the Don Russian Empire (now the village of Stanichno-Lugansk region, Lugansk region of Ukraine ), in a large peasant family of Ivan Kazimirovich and Tekli Aleksandrovna Geibo. Russian. Teklya Alexandrovna died of typhus in 1919. To feed six children, Ivan Kazimirovich got a job on the railway. Caring for younger brothers and sisters fell on the shoulders of the eldest daughter of Bronislava. Despite frequent travels, Joseph Gabo received a seven-year education. At school, he was a Komsomol activist, secretary of the Komsomol cell, so after graduation he was willingly hired by the technical secretary of the Komsomol district committee in Lugansk . Soon, on a Komsomol permit, he completed training courses for rural teachers, then one academic year he worked as a teacher in a rural school. In 1930, Joseph Geibo entered the Lugansk Railway College. In 1932 he was accepted into the membership of the CPSU (b) . After graduating from college in 1933, Joseph Gabo got a job as an assistant driver on the Donetsk Railway . However, he practically failed to work in his specialty.

Early years of military service

In the same 1933, according to the special set of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks, he was sent to the 9th military school of pilots and observer pilots in the city of Kharkov, then he was transferred to the First Military School of Pilots named after A.F. Myasnikov in the village of Kacha . In 1934, after graduating from the school of pilots, the younger pilot I. I. Geibo arrived to serve in the 35th air squadron of the 56th air brigade of the Ukrainian military district , stationed near Zhytomyr . Due to the aggravation of the military-political situation in the Far East in September 1937, the squadron was transferred to Chita . At the beginning of 1938 - assistant commander of the squadron of the 51st fighter aviation regiment of the 23rd aviation brigade , since July of the same year - the flight commander of the 8th fighter aviation regiment . Since March 1939, he was deputy squadron commander of the 70th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Air Force of the Trans-Baikal Military District , and soon became commander of the 5th squadron of this regiment.

From July to September 1939, the squadron commander, Senior Lieutenant I.I. Geibo, took part in battles on the Khalkhin-Gol River . He fought on the aircraft I-15 and I-153 "The Seagull . " During the battles, he made 82 sorties to attack and escort bombers. In 18 air battles he shot down 2 Japanese fighters personally and one in the group. In contrast to the battles, Joseph Ivanovich was promoted to captain and awarded the orders of Lenin and Red Star .

In September 1939, Captain I.I. Geibo was transferred to the 7th Fighter Aviation Regiment , which included in January 1940, he took part in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940 . The regiment fought as part of the Air Force of the North-Western Front and was deployed on the ice of Lake Valk-Yarvi (now Lake Michurinskoye, Leningrad Region ) and performed the tasks of attacking enemy troops and escorting bombers. During the Winter War, Captain Geibo completed 72 sorties, personally shot down 2 Finnish aircraft .

After the Soviet-Finnish war, in March 1940, Joseph Ivanovich was sent to the 92nd fighter aviation regiment of the 14th mixed aviation division of the Kiev Special Military District , which was formed in Uman, as an assistant commander of the regiment. As part of the regiment in the summer of 1940, he participated in the operation to send Soviet troops to Bessarabia . Until November 1940, the regiment was stationed at the airport in Balti , then it was transferred to Western Ukraine in the town of Brody . In January 1941, Captain I.I. Geibo was appointed deputy commander of the 46th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the same 14th Mixed Aviation Division , based at the Mlynov airfield in Dubno .

World War II

In the battles with the Nazi invaders, Joseph Ivanovich participated in the morning of June 22, 1941 as part of the South-Western Front . He fought on the aircraft I-16 , LaGG-3 , Yak-1 . At the 20th minute of the war, one of the first (if not the first) shot down a German plane, for which he was subsequently awarded the second Order of the Red Banner. In early August 1941, the regiment was included in the 6th fighter aviation corps of the Moscow Air Defense Zone , and in the second half of August it already fought on the outskirts of Leningrad as part of the 8th mixed aviation division of the 11th Army of the Southwestern Front. On August 19, 1941, in the Pulkovo area, Joseph Ivanovich was seriously wounded and until December 1941 was in the hospital.

After recovering, he was awarded the rank of major and in February 1942 he was appointed commander of the 20th Fighter Aviation Regiment as part of the Air Force of the 50th Army of the Western Front . In May 1942, the regiment became part of the 201st Fighter Aviation Division of the 1st Air Army of the Western Front. In its composition, Joseph Ivanovich defended the sky of Moscow region , was promoted to lieutenant colonel . In the summer of 1942, the division took part in the first Rzhev-Sychev operation .

In November 1942 he was appointed deputy commander of the 263rd Fighter Aviation Division of the 3rd Air Army of the Western Front. On February 18, 1943, Lieutenant Colonel I.I. Geibo became the commander of the 309th Fighter Aviation Division as part of the Western Front, and on June 28, 1943 he was awarded the next military rank of Colonel. In July 1943, the young commander was sent to study. In January 1944, he graduated from advanced training courses for air divisions commanders at the Military Academy of the command and navigator of the Red Army Air Force.

On February 2, 1944, Joseph Ivanovich was appointed commander of the 6th Guards Fighter Aviation Division of the 8th Air Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front , which he successfully commanded until the end of the war. Under his command, the division participated in the Nikopol-Kryvyi Rih operation and the Crimean operation . For the successful actions of the division during the liberation of the Crimea, Joseph Geibo was awarded the Order of Kutuzov, 2nd degree. In July - August 1944, the Geibo division participated in the Lviv-Sandomierz and Iasi-Chisinau operations . Then the division was withdrawn to the reserve of the Headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief and, after being completed in mid-September 1944, became part of the 5th Air Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. In its composition, the 6th Guards Fighter Division under the command of the Guard Colonel I.I. Geibo participated in Debrecen , Budapest , Vienna and Prague operations . By April 1945, the Guard Colonel I.I. Geibo made 177 sorties and shot down 5 enemy planes. On April 28, 1945, Colonel Joseph Ivanovich Geibo was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for the exemplary fulfillment of the tasks of the command and the courage, bravery and heroism shown. Following this, he was awarded the military rank of Major General . The war for Joseph Ivanovich ended on May 11, 1945 near Prague .

Post-War Service

After the war, he continued to serve in the USSR Air Force. For almost 2 years, until February 1947, he commanded the 6th Guards Fighter Aviation Division, which in the summer of 1945 became part of the 16th Air Army of the Group of Soviet Occupation Troops in Germany . Then he was sent to study and in 1949 he graduated from the Higher Military Academy named after K.E. Voroshilov . Since March 1949, he served as the head of the Armavir Military Aviation School of Pilots . Since June 1955 - Assistant Commander of the Air Force of the North Caucasus Military District. From July 1957 to December 1958 he served in the 10th Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR. Since December 1958 he served as chief of staff - first deputy commander of the Air Force of the Volga Military District. From July 1967 he was seconded to the General Staff, from October 1967 he was at the disposal of the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force. Since March 1968, Major General I.I. Gabe is in reserve.

He was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Moldavian SSR .

He lived in the city of Kuibyshev (since 1991 the city of Samara ). He was the head of the patriotic military-sports game " Zarnitsa ". He wrote a book of memoirs about the first day of the Great Patriotic War “There was a twentieth minute of the war.”

Joseph Ivanovich died on April 16, 1992. He was buried in Samara.
