Lega was a Huguenot who fled to Holland in 1689 after the abolition of the Nantes Edict in 1685. In 1690, he went according to the plan of Henry Ducin on the ship l'Hirondelle, along with a group of other Huguenots in the direction of the Indian Ocean . They planned to start a new life on the island of Reunion , which they believed was abandoned by the French. But since Reunion was still inhabited by the French, they instead landed on the uninhabited island of Rodriguez .
Two years later, they built a ship and sailed to Mauritius . Lega later returned to Europe. In 1708, he published a story about his adventures in London under the heading “Voyages et aventures de François Leguat et de ses compagnons en deux isles désertes des Indes orientales”, including his natural science observations. It described species such as the Rodriguez dodo ( Pezophaps solitaria ), the Rodriguez necklace ( Psittacula exsul ), as well as the lizards of the genus Phelsuma , probably Phelsuma gigas and Phelsuma edwardnewtoni .
