The Kingdom of Gwynedd ( val. Teyrnas Gwynedd ) is one of the Celtic kingdoms of medieval Wales . The traditional territory of Gwynedd is the north-west of the country, between the rivers Deevee and Dee and around Snowdonia ( val. Yr Eryri ), as well as the island of Anglesey ( val. Ynys Môn ). The rulers of Gwynedd, such as Milgun Hir , Grifid ap Llywelyn , Owain Gwynedd , Llywelyn the Great and Llywelyn The Last , traditionally played a leading role among the Welsh rulers. The geographical features of this remote mountainous area prevented the kings of England from effectively pursuing an aggressive policy. In honor of the founder of the dynasty, the royal house of Gwynedd is often called the House of Kuneda , and the older branch, leading from Anaraud ap Rhodri , is called the line of rulers of Aberfrau (although their capital was not always located in Aberfrau).

At the beginning of the 13th century, Llywelyn the Great made the region the center of the kingdom along the shore of the Irish Sea from Bangor to Conwy : the royal residence was located in Garth Kelin , on the banks of the Menai Strait . Bangor was the center of the diocese , and in Conwy was a Cistercian monastery, closely connected with the continental abodes of this order. Opposite of Garth Kelin, on the banks of the Anglesey, was the important trading port of Llanweiss.
