Life

Renata with parents, brothers and sisters (1896)

Renata was born into the family of Archduke Karl Stefan - the Austrian Archduke from the Teshin branch of the Habsburg dynasty and his wife Maria Theresa , also Archduke of Austria, Princess of Tuscany. Her father was the brother of the Spanish Queen Maria Cristina , wife of Alfonso XII . Thus, Renata was a cousin to King Alfonso XIII . Renata's mother was a granddaughter of the father of the last Duke of Tuscany, Leopold II , and of her mother, King of Both Sicilies Ferdinand II .

Renata received a home education. Parents made a great emphasis in languages. During her life, she learned German, Italian, English, French and Polish. Most of the time Renata spent on the Istrian Peninsula, where her father served. The family was very rich and owned an estate on the Adriatic Sea and a palace in Vienna. In 1895, her father inherited huge lands in Galicia from his relative, Archduke Albrecht, Duke of Teshen . Since 1907, the family lived in their residence in the castle of Zywiec in Western Galicia.

Archduke Karl Stefan left the service in the navy and the center of his ambitions was the creation of the Polish branch of the Habsburg dynasty. Father invited Renate to marry one of the richest people in Poland, Prince Jerome Radziwill - a representative of the richest family in Poland. In 1908, an engagement was announced. The wedding took place on January 15, 1909 in the chapel of Живywiecki Castle. But, since Jerome did not belong to the dominant European house, Renata, after the wedding, lost the title of Archduke of Austria, Princess of Hungary, Czech Republic and Bohemia . Six children were born in the family. The couple lived in one of the palaces of the Radziwill Balice. The eldest son of Renata Dominic married the Princess of Greece and Denmark, Eugene in 1938 . She was the granddaughter of the King of Greece, George I and Queen Olga . Renata died on May 16, 1935 in the Balitsa Palace. Her husband died 10 years later in a concentration camp in May 1945 .
