Elizabeth Connell ( born Elizabeth Connell ; October 22, 1946 , Port Elizabeth - February 18, 2012 , London [1] ) is a British opera singer ( soprano ).

Biography
Born in South Africa in a musical family. She graduated from the University of Witwatersrand , in 1970 she arrived in London. Studied at the London Opera Center. She made her debut as a mezzo-soprano at the Wexford Opera Festival (Ireland, 1972 ) in the opera of Janacek Katya Kabanova ( Varvara ), then she sang Princess Mary Bolkonskaya in the War and Peace of Prokofiev on the stage of the Sydney Opera House ( 1973 ). In 1976 she performed for the first time in Covent Garden ( Wicklind in Verdi Lombard ’s opera), in 1980 in Bayreuth in Wagner’s opera Lohengrin ( Ortruda ). Since 1983 acted as a soprano. She sang on the stages of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, USA, Latin America. He worked with such conductors as Claudio Abbado , Pierre Boulez , Carlo Giulini , Riccardo Muti , Giuseppe Sinopoli , Wolfgang Sawallisch , Charles Mackerras , Colin Davis , Lorin Maazel , James Levine , Seiji Ozawa , Riccardo Chailly , Lothar Zagroshek , Eliahu Inbal , Daniel Harding and etc.
The last time she appeared on the stage in February 2011 in Prague at the Puccini Turandot opera and in October 2011 at the opera gala festival in Bad Uraha in the operas Windsor Mockers Nikolai , Othello and Macbeth Verdi.
Died of lung cancer.
Repertoire
Her roles in the operas of Wagner and Richard Strauss are best known. She also performed and recorded vocal compositions by Beethoven , Schubert , Mendelssohn , Mahler , Schoenberg , Britten and others.
