Faafafine ( Samoan. Fa'afafine ) - in Polynesian culture (primarily in Samoa ) a person of the male (biological) gender, living since childhood as a woman (female social gender ).
The term "faafafin" includes the prefix fa'a- , meaning "like, in the image" and the root of fafine "woman". Faafafin from childhood has been raised as girls, although they are born as boys. The role of faafafin in society is clearly defined: they take care of the family, raise children, do housework and take care of the old and sick [1] .
Faafafin are considered in Samoa as representatives of the " third sex " and are not considered homosexuals . Faafafin’s partner is usually a man [2] .
