Biography

He came from a family of poor Imereti nobles of the Panchulidzevs . His father, David Matveevich Panchulidze, moved from Georgia to Russia in 1738, served as governor in Mtsensk in 1764, and governor in Veliky Ustyug in 1776, and was transferred to Saratov as adviser to the Saratov Civil Chamber in 1782. Brothers Semyon and Ivan Davydovichi served at the beginning of the XIX century already in the rank of general.

Aleksei also served in the army from a young age, in 1768 he was designated "a fourier for artillery", in 1775 he became a sergeant and in 1780 he became a bayonet-junker . He studied at the Cadet Corps, from where in 1784 he was dismissed due to weak health as a second lieutenant. Presumably, he moved to his father in Saratov, began civil service in the Saratov Chamber of the Criminal Court, and then served in several other civilian institutions in Saratov. According to Vigel , Panchulidzev

his special was not at all kind; small in stature, pale, weevil, gloomy and silent. His only or at least his main passion was prudent vanity. Never, did he allow himself to judge anything and nobody; on the contrary, he was more than condescending to all vices [2] .

In 1801 he was appointed Saratov vice-governor; May 21, 1808 (on the recommendation of O. P. Kozodovlev ) - Saratov civil governor. Under him, a new Saratov plan was adopted in 1812 with regular development of neighborhoods. With the participation of A. Panchulidzev, a gymnasium was opened, in 1810 a small wooden theater appeared with a troupe from its courtyards, an orchestra was formed, and the provincial printing house was resumed. In 1815, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was laid in memory of the victory over the French. Panchulidzev’s activities concerned all aspects of local life: for example, in June 1813 he ordered that the rivals not be recruited, and in case of a bite by a rabid dog, he ordered everyone to turn to the benefits of medical officials.

Even during the vice-governorship, he was in charge of considerable revenues from the Elton salt lake : for Saratov officials, according to Vigel, “his pocket became a channel through whichThe pactol was divided into small streams and spread over their skinny fields "; with the leadership “he got along through sharing” [2] . On the site of the Saratov Park of Culture and Rest (at the entrance from the 2nd Sadovaya Street) he built "not one huge and spacious house, but two or three connected by galleries, and with them many services, a vast courtyard and an endless garden" , which "occupied more space than the amusement castles of many of the German sovereign princes" [2] . The construction of the estate was carried out by the French captives in 1812.

In the 1820s Panchulidzev struck the Saratovites with his dinners and balls, which were flocked to by local officials, landowners, merchants, as well as all visitors from the capitals. He lived with great comfort. In the vast grove around his house there were ponds, feasts, walks, fireworks were arranged:

This enchanted castle served as a hotel and trap for all visitors from both capitals and other provinces; during their stay in Saratov, each of them used the room, lighting, heating, a table and a servant in it. This is not enough: a library, every year multiplied by newly published books in Russian and foreign languages, into which the owner himself never looked, was at the service of a small number of visitors reading it; the orchestra, with which there were two or three German bandmaster, should, at the slightest desire, amuse an equally small number of music lovers; his stable, filled with glorious trotters, and dog hunting were at the disposal of his guests more than in his own [2] .

At the end of the 20th century, A. D. Panchulidzev in Saratov was erected a monument at the entrance from the street. Rakhov in the Saratov GPKiO them. A. M. Gorky .

Family

He married three times with the expectation of a good dowry of brides. In the 1790s he married Maria Alexandrovna Gladkova (1770-1799), the niece of a major wine merchant and landowner G.V. Gladkov [3] . The second wife is Anna Sergeyevna Macheveriani (d. In 1802). His last wife was the daughter of Peter Petrovich Demidov - Catherine (1782-1847). One of her contemporaries, describing her stay in Saratov in 1813, wrote about the Panchulidzev family [4] :

The governor is a nice person, he is completely in his place, in every way. From his first wife he has two daughters, both married. They are very nice people. The governor’s wife is witty, talks about books, about various authors, about upbringing, loves foreigners, she is convinced that only she can raise children. She is not stupid, but she has too many complaints. She perfectly fulfills her duties, but she is also proud of her merits.
