Biography
Born June 29, 1919 in the village of Strakhin, municipality of Naklo, near Kranj . After graduating from high school, she joined the Yugobruna textile factory in Krana. In 1935, she married Rudolf Mede, who worked at the Semperit factory in Crane. Joined the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in 1936 .
When on July 26, 1941, near the village of Tsegelnitsa near Naklo, the First Crank partisan company was formed, then Pavel Mede joined it. Her entry into the ranks of the partisans was part of her revolutionary path. Her husband Rudolph also served in the company. Rota entered the battle for the first time near Storzhich, where she was defeated and was forced to retreat to Udni Borsht, where they entered the Krimsky partisan detachment near Ljubljana. Rudolph, who was called “Grog” in the ranks of the partisans, retreated to Dolensk and entered the 2nd Styrian battalion, while Pavel remained in Zapotok, the camp where she held seminars and meetings. There, from June 22 to 25, 1942 , the 2nd group of detachments headed for Styria made a stop. Rude entered its ranks, becoming the company commander of the 1st battalion of the Savinsky detachment.
First, the commanders of her battalion were Ivan the “Old Man” Janko (in his honor the battalion was called the “Yankov Battalion”), and then Franz “Agitated” Kranets (“Kranchev Battalion”). As part of the battalion, she participated in the campaign of the 2nd group of troops in Styria, fought on the Gabra mountain, the Zhirov peaks, near Blegosh and Elovitsy. On August 10, 1942, the group near Yelovitsa was divided into two more groups, one of which turned out to be the Kranchev Battalion. He ran into selected German units, but managed to break through to Kossuth and then leave for Karavanka and the Slovenian Korushka .
During the regrouping of the Styrian partisan detachments in September 1942, on the basis of the Kranchev Battalion, the 1st battalion of the Pokhorsky detachment was created, which is often called the Pokhorsky detachment itself. Rudolf Mede temporarily commanded this detachment, and the political commissar there was Jozhe "Menich" Raiko. Paul in the 3rd company retreated at the end of September 1942 in Pohorje. After its reorganization on November 3, 1942 , when the battalion included the Shalesh, Savinsky and Pushskaya companies, Pavel led a female platoon, and Rudolph became the full-time permanent commander of the battalion.
During the military campaigns of the Pokhorsky battalion in November and December 1942, Pavel Mede showed herself from the best sides: on November 5, 1942, she won a victory on the Mislin River as the commander of women's units. Two days later, the Pokhorsky battalion defeated a detachment of German policemen and punishers on the slope of Rogla, near Ostruh. For the first time after this, Pavel Mede received praise from war correspondents of the 2nd group of partisan detachments. On November 23, 1942, in the report of the General Staff of the Slovenian partisan detachments, Pavel Mede was mentioned as “Katarina” (her nickname in the detachment):
There is a special female detachment in the battalion (11 partisans), which proved to be excellent during its struggle ... The detachment commander, Comrade Katarina, is one of Styria’s bravest partisans.
Original text (Serb.)Bataљon ima is a specialty of women’s waters (11 partisans), who have one and the same show with her borbama ... Vodnik, friend of Katarina, the decline of me is a brave partisan near Staјersko.
It was also mentioned on January 10, 1943 in a message to the General Staff from the headquarters of the 4th operational zone that Pavel Mede showed herself in battle from the best sides.
January 8, 1943 Paul died in the last battle of the Pohor battalion in Osankaritsa. On January 11, 1943 she and another 65 killed partisans were buried by the Germans in Graz . By a decree of the Presidium of the People's Assembly of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia of December 20, 1951, Pavel was posthumously awarded the title of People's Hero of Yugoslavia.
