Harvey Willson Harkness ( English Harvey Willson Harkness ; 1821 - 1901 ) is an American mycologist, one of the first mycologists to study the California mushroom flora.

Biography
Harvey Wilson Harkness was born May 25, 1821 in Pelham , Massachusetts, the seventh child in a family of Scottish descent. Harvey studied at the Berkshire College of Medicine, in 1847 he became a doctor. In 1849, Harkness with a group of gold prospectors moved to California. Since 1850, he lived in Sacramento . Harvey took part in the founding of a school in Sacramento, later named after him. In 1854, Harvey Harkness married Amelia Griswold, but a few months later she died. In 1869, Harkness retired. He met some of the builders of the Transcontinental Railway, and on May 10, 1869, Harvey Wilson took part in the laying ceremony of her last sleepers. Harvey then moved to San Francisco . In 1869, he also traveled several times to the eastern states of the United States, Europe and northern Africa. On November 17, 1869, at the invitation of Ismail Pasha, he was present at the opening of the Suez Canal . On September 4, 1871, Harkness was elected to the California Academy of Sciences, in 1879, 1884 and 1885 he was its vice president. From January 1887 to January 1896, Harkness was president of the Academy. Harvey Harkness passed away July 10, 1901 in San Francisco.
