Annoatok gained fame in 1909, after he was elected a winter camp by Frederick Cook , who said that he had reached the North Pole on April 21, 1908. Cook lived here from September 3, 1907 to February 19, 1908, and from April 18 to April 21, 1909. The wintering hut was discovered by the French ethnographer Jean Mallory in 1952.
