Biography
Curtis Gates Lloyd was born July 17, 1859 in the city of Florence , Kentucky in the family of a local school teacher. When Curtis was 9 years old, his family moved to Crittenden . Since childhood, Lloyd was interested in botany. After leaving school, he began to wash various vessels in a pharmacy in Cincinnati . In 1886, Curtis and his older brothers John Uri and Nelson Ashley Lloyds founded their own drug manufacturing firm, Lloyd Brothers , which soon became one of the largest drug manufacturing facilities in the Midwest . Lloyd met with the mycologist E.P. Morgan , under the influence of which he became interested in the study of gastroomycete fungi. Since about 1905, Lloyd began to study exclusively mycology. For almost 15 years, he studied and visited various herbariums in Europe. In 1918, Curtis retired. In 1919, Curtis and his brothers founded the Lloyds Library and Museum in Cincinnati, which became one of the largest botanical libraries. The library has been publishing a magazine for several years, in which, among other works, Curtis publications on mycology were also published. In 1926, Lloyd's vision began to deteriorate rapidly, and he was forced to abandon the study of mycology. In June, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Cincinnati . On November 11, 1926, Curtis Gates Lloyd died in a hospital in Cincinnati.
