Biography
Kaaberma was born in the Estonian city of Haapsalu . There he began to engage in fencing. In 1988, Kaaberma first became the Estonian fencing champion and was invited to the USSR national team. In 1991, Kaido became the world champion in fencing in the fencing team tournament.
After the collapse of the USSR, Kaaberma continued his performances as part of the Estonian national team, but since the general level of fencing in Estonia was not at the highest level, high results at the world championships could not be achieved for a long time. In 1992, the Kaaberma first performed at the Summer Olympics . In the competition for fencers, the Estonian reached the semifinals, but then lost two fights in a row and remained in 4th place. At the end of the year, Kaaberma was recognized as the athlete of the year in Estonia.
In 1996, the Kaaberma took part in its second summer Olympic Games . In individual competitions of the fencers, Kaaberma reached the semifinals, where in a bitter struggle (14:15) lost to Cuban Ivan Trevejo . In the team tournament, the Estonian team lost already in the first round of Germany and was forced to fight only for 5-8th place. In the consolation tournament, the Estonian national team successively defeating the national teams of the USA and Hungary took 5th place. In 1999, Kaido again managed to climb the podium of the World Cup . At the championship in Korean Seoul, the Estonian athlete won a bronze medal.
At the 2000 Summer Olympics, Kaaberma was one of the favorites of the tournament and in the individual tournament the fencers were seeded with a high 4 number. But already in his first duel, Kaido lost to the little-known Colombian Mauricio Rivas and dropped out of the competition. In the team tournament, Kaaberma spent 6 fights and won two of them. But not the most successful performance of the partners allowed the Estonian team to take only 9th place. In 2001, the Estonian national team from Kaaberma made it to the finals of the World Cup , but lost to the Hungarian team.
The 2004 Summer Olympics could be the fourth for Kaaberma in his career, but the Estonian athlete could not qualify for them without fulfilling the necessary conditions for the Olympic qualification. In subsequent years, the Kaaberma became less involved in competitions at a large level. In 2006, Kaido suspended his performance in team tournaments, and after some time he completely completed his sports career.
In 2009, Kaaberma was appointed coach of the Estonian women's fencing team. At the end of 2009, the Kaaberma joined the reform party .
