At the end of 2012, the 19-year-old tennis player had already gotten close to the first hundred, taking the 127th line.
In the spring of 2013, for the first time in the dirt tournament in Oeirash, Puig reached the quarterfinals of the WTA competition. Having started with the qualification, she played in the first two rounds of Julia Gerges and Francesca Schiavone . This result allowed Monica to finally get into the Top 100 of the world ranking. In May, the Puerto-Rican made her debut in the main draw at the Grand Slam tournaments , playing at the French Open . Immediately she managed to get into the third round and replay the No. 11 sowing to Nadezhda Petrova and Madison Keese . Even better, she performed at the Wimbledon tournament in June. In the first round, she first beat top-10 tennis player Sarah Errani (No. 5 in the world at the time). After winning two more matches, Monica went on to the fourth round stage. The debut at the US Open turned out to be not so successful for her - at the start she lost to Alice Kleybanova . In September, Puig went to the quarterfinals of the tournament in Guangzhou . In Rio de Janeiro, Puig sensationally won the singles victory at the Olympic tennis tournament . At the start of the Olympics, Monica had never entered the top 30 of the world rankings in a career and won only one WTA tournament.
