Ordinary staphylin [3] , or bronze dotted [4] ( lat. Philonthus politus ) is a palearctic species of staphilinids from the subfamily Staphylininae , which has spread to almost all parts of the world except Antarctica [5] . Distributed in Europe , North Africa ( Algeria , Morocco , Tunisia ), in the Canary and Azores , in Iceland , Russia , the Caucasus , Turkey , Iran , Turkmenistan , Kazakhstan , Mongolia , China and India , as well as introduced in North America ( Mexico [6] , USA and Canada ), South America ( Argentina and Chile ), New Zealand , Australia and the Chatham archipelago [5] .

Individuals inhabit rotting organic remains, fungi , carrion and excrement of mammals , where adults and larvae prey on other dung and carrion insects [7] , for example, representatives of the diptera order [5] .
The body length of adults is 9-14 mm [8] . The length of the body of the pupae (not counting the urogomph) is 6.8–7.5 mm [5] .
