Parish of the Grenadines on the map

The total area of the parish is approximately 43 square kilometers, and the population, according to 2000, is about 9,200 people. Thus, the population of the parish is less than 10% of the population of the country. More than half of them - about 5000 people, live on the island of Bequia [1] .

In recent decades, the economy of the parish has focused on tourism, to a lesser extent on agriculture and fisheries. There is no industry.

Earlier whaling on the islands has long lost substantial economic importance. The island of Bekia, which is part of the parish, is known for the fact that some of its residents belong to one of the four ethnic groups in the world, for which the International Whaling Commission recognized the right to “indigenous whaling” necessary to preserve their cultural heritage and traditional way of life. Since 2013, a quota for the extraction of 4 whales per year has been reserved for the natives of Bequia. They are obliged to get them in traditional ways, from open boats and use for their own needs. This quota has never been used in its entirety [2] . Cutting of whales is carried out at the whaling station, located on the island of Petit Nevis, adjacent to Bequia. The station itself, at present, is a tourist attraction [3] .

In recent years, the political preferences of the parish population have been steadily on the side of the New Democratic Party of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines , which is currently in opposition. In the parliamentary elections of 2010 and 2015, this party won the elections in the territory of the parish.
