Biography

Giacomo Bresadola was born on February 14, 1847 in the city of Mezzana , which was at that time on the territory of Austria-Hungary . Since childhood, Giacomo was interested in botany. He studied at a primary school in Mezzan, then studied with his uncle priest in Klotz for some time. After that, Bresadol entered the Rovereto Technical Institute. A few years later he moved to the seminary of Trento . Then, Bresadola was a priest in Baselge di Pina , Ronceno Terme and Male . For five years he was vicar in Magras. At this time, he met with the botanist Francesco Ambrosi , a biologist Gustavo Venturi and some Italian mycologists. Pierre Andrea Saccardo introduced Brezadola to the French scientists Lucien Kele and Emile Budier . He corresponded with nearly 400 different scholars; Bresadola’s letters are currently kept at the University of Washington . From 1881 to 1892 a book was published by Giacomo Fungi tridentini novi vel novum vel nondum delineati . In 1884, Bresadola became vicar in Trento. Bresadola worked at the Italian Botanical Society and the Trento Museum of Natural History. In 1910, he retired. After World War I, Brezadol was forced to sell part of his herbarium. In 1927, he became an Honorary Doctor of the University of Padua . In the same year he was awarded the Order of the Crown of Italy . Giacomo Bresadola passed away on June 9, 1929 in Trento.
