The college was founded in 1885 by decision of the United States Methodist Bishops Conference as the Women's College of Baltimore ( English Women's College of Baltimore City ). In 1910 he received the current name in honor of the clergyman John Franklin Gaucher (1845-1922), who carried out the main work on the establishment and initial arrangement of the college. At its founding, the college was located in the outskirts of Baltimore, now called Charles Village; to its current location in Towson, it was moved in 1953 . Up until 1986, only girls were enrolled in college, and co-education is currently underway.
