Creation History

The decision to build the monument to T. G. Shevchenko in Lviv was made on June 22, 1987. The following year, a regional competition for the best project was announced, which did not bring the expected result: among 40 groups of authors, not one was noted. The following year, also to no avail, a republican contest was held. Nevertheless, the Lviv city executive committee concluded an employment contract for the production of a project with the young Lviv sculptors brothers A. and V. Sukhorsky. The construction of the monument coincided with the years of the formation of Ukraine, characteristic of the severe financial crisis. The project of young sculptors was successfully implemented, thanks to the help of the Ukrainian diaspora.

The grand opening of the monument to T. G. Shevchenko took place on August 24, 1992, on the anniversary of the adoption of the declaration of independence of Ukraine, and exactly four years later a 12-meter bronze element of the monument to the poet was opened.
