Savich, Vsevolod Pavlovich

Vsevolod Pavlovich Savich was born in 1885 in Bobruisk . From 1895 he studied at the gymnasium in Mozyr , then moved to the Minsk gymnasium, which he graduated in 1904. Then Vsevolod went to St. Petersburg to study in the biological group of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of St. Petersburg University . At the same time he worked as an extra in theaters, played small roles in the New Theater of L. B. Yaborskaya . In 1906 he took part in a street demonstration, for which he was dismissed from the theater.

In the same year, Professor H. Ya. Gobi invited Savich to work as a preparation and curator of the herbarium of St. Petersburg University. Vsevolod began to study lichenology with the support and guidance of A. A. Elenkin . From 1907 to 1912, Savich worked as an assistant to V. L. Komarov . In 1907, Savich and L.G. Ramensky, under the leadership of Komarov, conducted a study of the flora of the Yamburg and Gdov counties of St. Petersburg province . Then Vsevolod Pavlovich was elected secretary of the botanical circle at the university.

In 1908 - 1910 Savich took part in Komarov’s expedition to Kamchatka and to the Ussuri Territory . There he collected a valuable herbarium of lichens, mushrooms, mosses and algae. In 1912, Savich graduated from the University, from 1913 to 1917 he served in the army. In 1914 he took part in hostilities in Austria . From 1920 to 1927, Savich took part in various scientific expeditions. In 1930, he went on an expedition with O. Yu. Schmidt and V. Yu. Wiese on the icebreaker-steamboat Georgy Sedov . The expedition route passed through the archipelagos of Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya .

In 1920, Vsevolod Pavlovich Savich became the scientific secretary of the Main Botanical Garden of the RSFSR in Petrograd. In 1932-1937 he was the deputy director, in 1932-1962 he was the head of the BIN spore plant department. In 1934, Savich became a doctor of biological sciences , in 1937 - a professor .

Vsevolod Pavlovich Savich published about 180 scientific works, most of which are taxonomic monographs of lichens. From 1933 to 1937 he was the editor-in-chief of the journal " Soviet Botany ". He was also the editor of six of the eight volumes of Spore Plant Flora. Then, under his editorship, the journal “ News of the Systematics of Lower Plants ” was published. From 1936 to 1951, Savich was the editor of the journal Nature .

In 1972, Savich, crossing Kamennoostrovsky Avenue , was hit by a car. Two days later, despite the operation, Vsevolod Pavlovich Savich died.

In 1930, during the expeditions of Schmidt and Wiese, a peninsula in the Russian harbor of the Northern island of Novaya Zemlya was named in honor of Savich.
