Member of the US National Academy of Sciences (1972) [1] .

Education and career

Goldreich graduated from Cornell University , receiving a bachelor 's degree in 1960, and in 1963 received a doctorate under the scientific supervision of Thomas Gold [2] [3] [4] . In 1963-1964 he was engaged in scientific work at the University of Cambridge [5] . From 1964 to 1966 he worked as an assistant professor at the Department of Astronomy and Geophysics at the University of California, Los Angeles . In 1966 he moved to the California University of Technology, where until 1969 he worked as an associate professor [3] [6] , after which he received the position of professor himself ( English full professor ). In 1981, he headed the professorship of astrophysics and planetary physics, Lee Dubridge [3] .

Scientific Achievements

  • In 1969, Goldreich and Alar Toumre were the first to explain the process of moving the poles of the Earth by the addition of rotational components ( precession and nutation ) with forces arising from continental drift [7] .
  • In collaboration with George Abell , he established that the formation of planetary nebulae is associated with the dumping of the outer shell of the red giants when they turn into white dwarfs [8] .
  • In 1979, Goldreich, along with Scott Tremayne they suggested that Saturn’s F ring is served by shepherd satellites , the prediction was confirmed by observations and research in 1980 [9] [10] [11] [12] . Scientists also suggested that the rings of Uranus are held in orbit by a similar mechanism, which was confirmed in 1986.
  • In 1980, again in collaboration with Tremain, a planetary migration mechanism was proposed that explained the origin of the hot Jupiters [13] [14] .

Awards and recognition

  • 1960-1961 - Honorary Presidential Scholarship of Woodrow Wilson [3] .
  • 1968-1970 - Sloan Scholarship [3] .

Discovered in 1981, the asteroid (3805) Goldreich is named after him.
