I district (Turku)

The area is located between Uudenmaankatu streets and the First Finnish national road (part of highway E 18 ) towards Helsinki .

The main street of the Hämeenkatu district divides the district into two halves - Sirkkala and the university campus, passing on the road number 10 towards Hämeenlinna .

The historical and architectural core of the district is Old Square . A large number of architectural monuments of regional and national importance are concentrated on it and around it, including the Cathedral , the residence of the Archbishops of Turku , a number of museums - the Museum of Music of Jan Sibelius , the House-Museum of Ett Hem .

In the district there are three higher educational institutions of the city - Abo Academy , Turku University and the Higher School of Economics (from 1950 to 2009, acting as an independent university, and later becoming part of the structure of the University of Turku).

In 2007, the population of the district was 6,291 people.

In 2004, the population of the district was 6,177 people, of whom 4.9% were children under the age of 15 (5.47% in 2004) and 18.1% over 65 years old (18.67% in 2004). 84.4% spoke Finnish as their native language (85.54% in 2004), 11.9% spoke Swedish (10, 94% in 2004), and 3.7% spoke other languages ​​(3 in 2004, 51%) of the population of the district.
