Biography
Grigory Lvovich Arsh was born in 1925 in Arkhangelsk . Member of the hostilities of the Great Patriotic War from July 1943 to July 1944 . As part of the troops of the Steppe Front, he participated in the Battle of Kursk , as part of the 1st Belorussian Front - in the battles for the liberation of Belarus. Was injured; commissioned from the ranks of the Red Army 02/23/1945. After the war, he was represented by the district military commissar [1] for being awarded the Order of the Red Star and the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree [2] .
In 1951 he graduated from the History Department of Leningrad University . He worked as a teacher at a school in Leningrad, then entered graduate school at the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences .
By this time, he had become the leading specialist in the history of Albania in the USSR . A deep knowledge of the Albanian language and literature , a variety of historical sources gave his works a fundamental and comprehensive presentation of the history of Albania and Russian-Albanian relations from the Middle Ages to the new and modern times. Grigory Lvovich Arsh is the author of the history of Albania, which came out as a separate section of the seven-volume series of collective monographs, “International Relations in the Balkans,” prepared by the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Brilliant knowledge not only of Albania, but also of the Balkan region in general, prompted Grigory Arsha to study the history of Greece back in the 1960s . The historian devoted considerable attention to the national liberation war against the Ottoman Empire of 1821-1829 . Thanks to the introduction of new archival diplomatic documents, Grigory Arsh managed to recreate a comprehensive picture of the events on the Balkan Peninsula in the first half of the 19th century.
He died on September 15, 2017 in Moscow [3] .
Scientific activity
In 1959, he defended his Ph.D. Russia) ”, at the Institute of Slavic Studies and Balkan Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences). Published in 1970 as a monograph, it remains a textbook of the period of the Greek Revolution .
The latest works of the scientist are devoted to the issues of national identity of the Greeks of the Diaspora at the beginning of the 19th century, phyllinism , etc. Numerous works of Arsh are translated into Albanian, Greek, English, French and other European languages.
One of the important directions of the scientist's activity is the publication of documents from Russian archives devoted to the history of Albania, Greece and Russian-Balkan relations, including the correspondence of Alexander Ipsilanti .
Member of the editorial boards, executive editor of the volumes of the multivolume “Balkan Studies” (M., 1974-1997, 18 issues were published); participated in the work of the authors of a series of monographs "International Relations in the Balkans" (M., 1983-1997). Member of the editorial board of the scientific publication Modern Greek Studies Yearbook (USA).
