Biography

Giovanni Antonio Battarra was born on June 9, 1714 in the region of Coriano in the province of Rimini in the family of Domenico Battarra and Giovanna Francesca Fabbri. He studied at the seminary in Rimini, in 1738 he became a priest. Battarra then studied geometry, physics, and natural history from a renowned biologist, archaeologist, and physician Giovanni Bianchi (1693-1775). Since 1741, Giovanni Antonio taught philosophy at the seminary in Savignano . There he worked for four years. Battarra then became interested in biology, especially mycology. He was a student of the naturalist Bruno Tozzi (1656-1743), author of the book Sylva Fungorum . In 1748, Giovanni began to teach philosophy in Rimini. In 1755, Battarra's book Fungorum agri ariminensis historia was published, containing 40 illustrations of mushrooms. In 1757, he was appointed professor of philosophy in Rimini. In 1778 he published the work of Pratica agraria . Giovanni Battarra died on November 8, 1789 in Rimini .

In 1801, the Dutch mycologist Christian Heinrich Perse named the genus Battarrea in honor of Battarra [1] .
