History

The magazine was created in 1989 on the initiative of young Leningrad film critics with the support of the director of the Lenfilm film studio Alexander Golutva.

The first issue was released in May 1990 [2] . Since 1994, "Session" begins publishing, and since 1997 - research activities. The publication of the magazine was suspended for 6 years and resumed in 2004 . By the end of 2014, 58 issues of the magazine [1] were released . In parallel with the printed version in the format of thick black and white thematic double numbers, Session exists online: Seance.ru is a daily portal about cinema and culture. As an appendix to the site and the printed number, since 2012, the publics of the Session magazine on social networks have been actively developing.

Topics and Authors

Articles in the journal are devoted to current events in Russian and world cinema, and through their interpretation - in modern society and culture [2] .

The authors of the magazine are Arkady Ippolitov , Oleg Kovalov , Tatyana Moskvina , Konstantin Murzenko , Andrey Plakhov , Dmitry Savelyev , Avdotya Smirnova , Mikhail Trofimenkov , Ilya Oskolkov-Tsentsiper , Alexey Gusev , Konstantin Shavlovsky , Vasily Stepanov , Lilia Shitenburg, Maria Kuvelshinova Alexey Vasiliev. Among the authors are not only professional film critics and film critics, but also philosophers, art historians, literary critics and writers. Articles for the Session were written by Mikhail Yampolsky , Victor Toporov , Mikhail Trofimenkov, Alexander Sekatsky , Natalya Trauberg , Ekaterina Andreeva , Elena Fanailova , Samuel Lurie , Dmitry Bykov and others [3] .

The magazine quickly established itself as a serious art history publication. Summing up the last decade of the 20th century, Dmitry Bykov called “Session” “the main Sinophilian magazine of the 90s” and described the position of its authors as “exclusively aesthetic”, because “for them, life is only a subject of art and exists in their minds only to the extent in which this art is imprinted ” [4] . According to Gleb Morev , “Session” “combined new cinema and art criticism with new literature and journalism” and turned out to be “almost the only magazine project of the 90s that combined Petersburg intelligibility with a thorough knowledge of the context and a clear understanding of the tasks” [5 ] .

Publisher

In 1993, the Session Publishing House was founded under the magazine, which publishes collections of scripts (a series of “Film Drama Library” series), monographs about directors, and books about cinema.
In 1994, the first book, Sokurov, [6] , a collection of creative materials and critical articles on the work of director Alexander Sokurov , was published.
In 2000–2005 , the efforts of the Session created the seven-volume encyclopedia The Latest History of Russian Cinema , covering the transition period from Gorbachev to Putin [2] .
