James Bolton was born in the small town of Worley in Yorkshire in 1735 . James's father, William Bolton, was a weaver. At first, James followed in his father's footsteps, but then became a drawing teacher and the owner of a pub in Worley. In 1768, Bolton married Sarah Blackburn, they had four children.

James and his older brother, Thomas Bolton (1722-1788), were both interested in biology. Thomas was particularly attracted to entomology and ornithology, and James was attracted to botany and mycology. In honor of Thomas Bolton in 1807, the species of dragonflies Cordulegaster boltonii discovered by him was named. James and Thomas Bolton were the authors of a section on the natural history of Halifax , John Watson's book The History and Antiquities of the Parish of Halifax in Yorkshire .

In 1785, Richard Relan's book Flora Cantabrigiensis was published, illustrated by James Bolton. In the same year, Bolton published the first volume of the book Filices brittanicae , dedicated to the ferns of Great Britain. The second volume was published in 1790 . From 1788 to 1792 , a four-volume work of Bolton An history of fungusses was published , in which an illustration was attached to each description of the species. In 1792 - 1794 , the book Harmonia ruralis was published, in which Bolton described and depicted the birds of Great Britain known to him, as well as their eggs and nests.

Many of Bolton's illustrations have not been published, but some watercolors are kept at the London Museum of Natural History , the Liverpool Museum, and the Lindley Library.

James Bolton corresponded with many mycologists and nerds. Among them were Pierre Buyar , James Dickson , John Lightfoot and Karl Wildenov . In 1795-1820, the book An history of fungusses was translated by Wildenov into German and published under the title Jacob Boltons Geschichte der merckwürdigsten Pilze .

James Bolton died on January 7, 1799 in Worley.
