Botanical Description

Fast-growing, mostly evergreen trees with hollow stems, sometimes with props. The leaves are large, thyroid, usually palmate, on long petioles. The flowers are small, nondescript, dioecious, in dense spike-shaped inflorescences, collected and bunches on common legs in the axils of the leaves. Fruits are single-seeded, numerous.

Biological Features

Mymecophilia is characteristic of some species. A fertilized female ante from the genus Azteca gnaws at the wall of a hollow stem thinned at the top of the internode and displays its offspring inside the stem. Ants feed on special outgrowths (nutrient bodies) that form on the inside of the swollen bases of leaf petioles. It is believed that ants from this genus protect cecropia from the attack of leaf-cutting ants (from the genera Atta , Acromyrmex ).

Among the myrmecophiles is cecropia thyroid ( Cecropia peltata ), also called the “trumpet tree," because the Indians made their wind pipes from its hollow stems. The thyroid cecropia trunks split in half are used as gutters.
