Object D №1

Object D No. 1 - the first satellite of the “ Object D ” series, launched on April 27, 1958, ended with an explosion of a launch vehicle due to fluctuations in the oxidizer main at the 89th second of the flight. The investigation of the accident allowed to improve the rocket and increase its reliability.

When launching, the rocket collapsed due to oscillations and fell 100 kilometers from the launch. The satellite withdrew and fell separately. The damaged satellite was taken to the test assembly complex. When trying to open it, the wires caught fire. Launched later, Sputnik-3 was a backup.
