Biography
He studied at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of St. Petersburg University , which he graduated in 1903. Then in 1906 - the St. Petersburg Conservatory in composition class. Pupil N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and A. K. Lyadov .
In the years 1910-1938 - teacher of the theory of composition and orchestration at the St. Petersburg (then Petrograd and Leningrad) Conservatory. In the years 1930-1937 was the head of the department of instrumentation.
He was buried at the Literatorsky Bridges of the Volkovsky cemetery of St. Petersburg.
Pedagogical activity
He brought up a number of talented musicians and composers, among his pupils A. V. Gauk , A. S. Zhivotov , Kh. S. Kushnaryov, E. A. Mravinsky , E. I. Ovchinnikov , P. B. Ryazanov , etc.

Awards and prizes
- 1st prize (in the USSR) for a symphony at the International Competition for the 100th anniversary of the death of composer F. Schubert (1928).
