Samuel Jones Tilden ( February 9, 1814 , New Lebanon , Columbia , New York, USA - August 4, 1886 , Yonkers , Westchester, New York, USA) is a politician of the Reconstruction and Monolithic South era in US history. He was a member of the bourbon New York Democrats .

He was governor of the State of New York (1875-1876).
He lost the presidential election of 1876 only because of the electoral college , although he received 3% more votes than Rutherford Hayes . He recognized Hayes as president during the compromise of 1877, which completed the reconstruction of the South .
