Pope Pius XII
The cardinals erected by Pope Pius XII - 56 prelates were elevated to the rank of cardinal in only two Consistories for 19 years of the pontificate Pius XII. Some researchers attribute this to the outbreak of World War II , which began exactly six months after the election of Eugenio Pacelli as pope. During the war years, the Pope did not elevate anyone to the cardinals. And the first consistory gathered six years after the beginning of the pontificate of Pius XII. The second consistory was convened seven years after the second.
The Consistory of 1946 , at which 32 new Cardinals were appointed, broke the Consistory record of July 1, 1517 , at which Pope Leo X elevated 31 people to the Cardinals.
