His Grace Bishop Jonas Boruta ( lit. Jonas Boruta ; born October 11, 1944 , Kaunas , Lithuanian SSR , USSR ) is a Lithuanian religious figure. Bishop Telšiai (since January 5, 2002 ).

Biography

In 1962, after graduating from high school in Kaunas, he tried to enter the seminary, but was not accepted due to pressure from the Soviet government (His father was a member of the Lithuanian resistance).

He entered the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Vilnius University . In 1970 he graduated from the University and joined the Institute of Physics of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences . In 1982 he defended his thesis, but did not receive a scientific degree. In 1992, the Lithuanian Council of Nostrification awarded him a doctorate in natural sciences.

In 1975, he began studying theology in an underground seminary. In 1981, he entered as a novice in the Society of Jesus (It was banned in the USSR). On August 5, 1982, he was secretly ordained a priest . Soviet authorities did not allow him to carry out his priestly ministry. Since 1983 - editor of the underground publication “Chronicle of the Catholic Church in Lithuania”. In 1983-1989 he was one of the main organizers and teachers of underground theology courses for nuns of Lithuania.

In 1989-1998 , he was a provincial of the Lithuanian and Latvian Jesuit provinces. From 1997 to 2006 - President of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Sciences.

Since May 28, 1997 - Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Vilnius and titular Bishop of Vulturaria. On June 21, 1997, he was consecrated bishop .

In 1997-2002 , he was Secretary General of the Conference of Lithuanian Bishops .

Since January 5, 2002 - Bishop of Telšiai .

In 2002—2011 - Chairman of the Liturgy Commission of the Conference of Lithuanian Bishops. In 2011, he was elected Chairman of the Council on Ecumenical Relations of the Conference of Lithuanian Bishops.
