Biography
His childhood passed in Lviv . There he graduated from the IV classical lyceum named after Jan Dlugosh . He studied philosophy and pedagogy at the Catholic University of Freiburg (Friborg) in Switzerland. In addition to philosophy and pedagogy, he studied paleography, numismatics and archeology, and also improved his knowledge in classical languages - Latin, Greek and Hebrew. He graduated from the university in 1937, receiving the title of Doctor of Philosophy. After leaving school, despite the opportunity to engage in research work in Switzerland, he returned to his homeland and settled in Lviv. During the Second World War he took an active part in the resistance. After the war, he was the principal and teacher at the school. He moved to Tomaszow Mazowiecki , where he also worked in school education (in 1946-1948 as the director of the teacher's lyceum). In 1948 he traveled to Lodz , where as a professor of philosophy he lectured on the history of philosophy . In 1953 he moved from Tomaszow Mazowiecki to Warsaw and became a professor at the University of Warsaw . He remained connected with the University of Warsaw until the end of his life. In addition to the scientific and pedagogical activities of the professor, Jan Legovic held various administrative posts at the University of Warsaw. He also lectured at the Military Political Academy. Since 1968, Y. Legovich was chairman of the editorial board of the Library of the Classics of Philosophy (BKF) series, replacing Tadeusz Kotarbinsky . On his initiative, a volumetric translation of the works of Aristotle was published in the series "Library of the Classics of Philosophy". In 1979, he resigned, but continued to take an active part in scientific life. Edited a number of journals (including Philosophical Studies ). Jan Legovic played an important role in the development of the history of philosophy in Poland. His historical and philosophical works brought up a whole generation of philosophers.
