Biography
Born into a military family in the city of Sprottau [4] , his family later moved to Gliwice . As a child, he attended a Catholic gymnasium, after which he transferred to a gymnasium in Wroclaw , where he discovered a craving for philology and language. Since 1849, he studied classical philology at the Wroclaw Institute, listened to lectures on the German studies of Karl Weinhold . In 1851 he left for Berlin , where he listened to lectures by William Grimm and Heimann Steintal . Two years later, he received a Ph.D. from the University of Halle . At first, Karl wanted to become an actor, after he was attracted by the position of civil servant, but his throwing over the choice of occupation was unsuccessful. Therefore, he accepted a job offer in the archives of Paris , London and Oxford . There, he copied by hand the songs of the troubadours . After returning from the trip, Karl Barch worked as a teacher at home with a baron.
In the fall of 1855, Barch got a place as a caretaker in the library of the German National Museum in Nuremberg , but due to conflicts with his superiors he was forced to leave the city. In 1858, Carl arrived in Rostock , where he soon founded the first Institute of German Studies in all of Germany. Until 1871, he worked at the Institute as a professor of German studies and novel studies, and was twice elected rector . He was invited to the post of professor of German studies and Romance philology at the University of Heidelberg , where he worked until his death in 1888.
