Biography
Leonid Balitsky was born on May 25, 1917 in the village of Buznikovatoye (now Olshansky district of the Kirovograd region ) in a peasant family. Ukrainian .
After graduating from school for working youth, he worked as a blacksmith in a locomotive depot at the Shevchenkovo station. In 1938 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since June 1941 - on the fronts of World War II. In 1943 he joined the CPSU (b) . By November 1943, the guard sergeant Leonid Balitsky was the driver of the T-34 tank of the 424th tank battalion of the 56th guards tank brigade ( 7th guards tank corps , 3rd guards tank army , 1st Ukrainian front ). He distinguished himself during the Kiev offensive operation [1] .
On November 4, 1943, units of the 3rd Guards Tank Army were brought into battle to strengthen the strike force in the Kiev direction. By the middle of the day, her tank corps overtook the infantry and advanced 8 kilometers in depth, breaking through the defenses of German troops. Balitsky’s tank broke into the village of Svyatoshino (now within the borders of Kiev), cutting off the Kiev - Zhytomyr highway, destroying a large amount of enemy manpower and military equipment [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 10, 1944, Leonid Balitsky was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .
In 1944, Balitsky graduated from the military-political school in Gorky . In 1945, the rank of senior lieutenant was sacked. In 1951 he graduated from the Agricultural Institute in Odessa , after which he worked as an agronomist, later as a director of a state farm . He lived in the city of Balta, Odessa region . He died in 1990 [1] .
He was also awarded the orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and the Red Star , as well as a number of medals [1] .
