Construction History
The B-37 was laid down on July 18, 1958 at the plant No. 196 "Sudomeh" in Leningrad . Launching took place on November 5 of the same year. In May 1959, it was transferred via the White Sea-Baltic Canal to the outfitting base in Severodvinsk for passing acceptance tests, and on November 5, 1959 it entered service. On January 3, 1960, it became part of the 33rd Northern Fleet submarine division based on Polyarny .
Service History
In August 1960, she took part in the Meteor exercises in the Atlantic Ocean.
On January 11, 1962, ammunition exploded on the boat - 11 torpedoes. The first and second compartments were completely destroyed. 59 crew members on board died, the commander survived, who was thrown from the deck of the boat into the water by the explosion, and thirteen crew members (three people were outside the submarine, 7 people were saved through the hatch of the 7th compartment, 3 people left boat through the superstructure). As a result of the explosion, the nearby submarine S-350 of project 633 was damaged and sank, 11 people died on it. Of the crews of other submarines, 4 people died, of the reserve crew No. 154 - 1 person, of the coastal base of the 4th squadron of submarines - 4 people.
Total killed - 79 people. Wounded - 52 people, including one civilian.
Both boats sank, work on lifting them took 22 days. For some time, the B-37 stood at the pier with a plug in place of the severed bow. The government commission could not establish the cause of the explosion. The main versions: a random shot from a watchman’s weapon, an improper torpedo repair with a blowtorch, a torpedo defect.
May 7, 1963 B-37 was withdrawn from the fleet and sent for processing.
