In 1741 he began serving in the French army, participated in the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years War . In 1750 he joined the Austrian army . He took part in the Seven Years War , the War of the Bavarian Succession , in which, with the rank of Field Marshal Lieutenant, he commanded the Special Corps, and the Austro-Turkish War of 1787-1791 .
In 1792 he was the commander of troops in Breisgau and acted against the troops of the French Republic . He was defeated and was removed from command.
In 1795 he took part in the battle of the Rhine. At the head of 85 thousand Austrians, together with Field Marshal Klerfe and his 100 thousandth army defeated the 100 thousandth Sambro-Maas army of the French General Jourdan .
In 1796 he was sent to Italy at the head of a 60 thousandth army to stop Bonaparte . Wurmser divided his troops into three parts: a 5 thousandth detachment was sent through the Brenta Valley. General Kvazhdanovich walked along the western shore of Lake Garda . Field Marshal himself with 24 thousand soldiers moved to the Adige Valley to join the 13 thousandth garrison of Mantua.
On August 5, 1796, Wurmser was defeated by Bonaparte in the general battle of Castiglion .
On September 8, 1796, French troops overtook Wurmser near the town of Bassano . With the remnants of the army, Wurmser locked himself in the fortress of Mantova , whose garrison as a result increased to 28 thousand people. The depletion of food supplies and the spread of diseases in the troops forced him to capitulate on February 2, 1797, together with 16 thousand soldiers and officers.
Upon returning to Austria, he was appointed Governor-General of Hungary .

On January 25, 1761, she married Sofia Henrietta Rosina Juliana von und zu der Tann, who died on June 27, 1772 during childbirth. Children born in marriage:
