Vimil

In June 1785, the French natural scientist Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier attempted to fly the English Channel in a balloon, but the balloon caught fire and Rozier died. This event was the first disaster in the history of aviation.

In 1804, a part of Napoleon’s army was set up in Vimil, preparing to invade England. This operation was not destined to take place, but in memory of the Great Army a 50-meter column was built in Vimila, the construction of which was begun in 1804 and completed in 1841. The column is crowned by a statue of Napoleon.
