Biography

Early years

Fair was born on April 17, 1967 in New Haven . The adopted daughter of wealthy parents, she grew up in Winnetka and studied art at Oberlin College , where she became interested in rock music and met guitarist Chris Brockaw , with whom she moved to San Francisco after completing her studies.

Career

Returning to Chicago , Elizabeth began composing songs and releasing them under the pseudonym Girlysound. In 1992, she signed with Matador Records , which released her debut album Exile in Guyville the following summer. A record whose structure refers to the disc The Rolling Stones Exile on Main St. , was a success with both critics and fans of alternative rock. Topping the lists of the best albums of the year in Spin magazine and the Pazz & Jop poll , she was also able to get on the Billboard 200 chart and in 1998 received a gold certificate from RIAA . Later, in 2003, Exile in Guyville was among the 500 best albums of all time according to Rolling Stone . A number of independent rock musicians, including Steve Albini , were unsatisfied with the attention paid to the singer and began to criticize her, but by then Liz Fair had her first tour and started recording the next album. Two discs released in the 1990s received generally positive reviews. In 2003, she returned after a five-year hiatus with an eponymous album that received mixed and negative ratings, as did her subsequent work.

Personal life

In 1995, Fair married Jim Staskausas, a film editor who worked on her video clips, and gave birth to his son James Nicholas on December 21, 1996.
