Biography
Joseph (Joseph) Nawal Hirbes was born on December 11, 1820 in Algemesi in the province of Valencia in Spain . She was the eldest child of five children in the family of peasants Francisco Naval and Maria Josepha (Josefa) Hirbes. At age 8, Pepa (as her relatives called her) received the Anointing, and a year later - the First Communion . For some time she attended a school located near the house, where she learned to read and write, embroider gold on silk.
On June 19, 1833 her mother passed away and soon the family moved to her aunt on the maternal side. Joseph was forced to interrupt her studies in order to help with the housework. At the same time, she led a pious life, taking communion daily and helping the parish. With the blessing of the confessor - the parish priest Caspar Silvestre - December 4, 1838, Joseph brought a private vow of chastity. In 1847, aunt died and she took care of her father and disabled uncle.
In 1850, Joseph was blessed to gather friends in her house, who formed a community with her. Together they engaged in catechesis and education of children from poor families, formed prayer groups of married women and widows. Joseph taught girls and girls how to sew and embroider so that they could provide for themselves by doing this craft. As a member of the St. Vincent Conference, she visited the sick poor and imprisoned women.
Later, Joseph joined the Third Order of Our Lady of Carmel and St. Theresa or the Secular Order of the Barefoot Carmelites (OCDS). With special care she surrounded the orphans and the homeless. In 1885, during the cholera epidemic, Josep looked after the sick. She died on February 24, 1893 in Algemesi in Spain. She was buried in a local cemetery with a large crowd.
