AfterStep is a window manager for the X Window System , during the development of which it was provided the flexibility to customize the desktop, improved appearance and efficient use of system resources. AfterStep was originally a variant of FVWM , which reproduced the graphical interface of the NeXTSTEP operating system , but with the course of development it moved away from its roots.

AfterStep includes several modules, such as:
- Pager - a visual tool for managing and moving between multiple desktops
- WinList - a simple taskbar that displays active applications
- Wharf is a tool for managing the launch of applications, a panel containing the most commonly used applications and applets .
AfterStep supports virtual screens. Appearance customization is performed using a set of text configuration files .
AfterStep is supported by a small community of developers, in which Sasha Vasco is the project manager.
