Biography
Yakov Ivanovich Afanasyev was born on July 24, 1919 into a peasant family on the farm (according to other sources on the neighboring farm ) in the Kursk district of the Kursk province (now in the Paninsky village council of the Medvensky district of the Kursk region ). Jacob was the youngest of three children of Ivan and Anna Petrovna Afanasyev.
After graduating from a college of agricultural mechanization in Novy Oskol, he worked at a machine and tractor station.
In February 1940 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1942 he graduated from the Stalingrad Military Tank School , evacuated to Kurgan . Since December 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War .
In July 1943 he joined the CPSU (b) .
In August 1943 he was wounded. By the summer of 1944, Senior Lieutenant Afanasyev commanded a tank company of the 1st Tank Battalion of the 51st Guards Tank Brigade of the 6th Guards Tank Corps of the 3rd Guards Tank Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the battles near the city of Lviv [1] .
Having made a roundabout maneuver, the company under the command of Afanasyev impudently raided the railway station in Sudovaya Vyshnya , thereby cutting off the Lviv - Przemysl railway and highway and seizing two enemy trains with fuel and military equipment. Subsequently, the Afanasyev company was among the first to force the Vistula south of the city of Sandomierz , taking part in the capture of the bridgehead on its western shore [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 23, 1944, Senior Lieutenant Yakov Afanasyev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .
During the fighting in Poland, he was seriously wounded, from whom he died on January 16, 1945 .
Yakov Ivanovich Afanasyev was buried to the city of Pshedbuzh of the Radomshchansky district of the Polish Republic . He was reburied at the memorial cemetery in the city of Kielce of Kielce County in the ентwiętokrzyskie Voivodeship of Poland , but his name is not immortalized on the memorial slabs and he is not buried in the lists of famous 353 (out of 4011).
