At the five previous Olympics, the Germans from the United Team of Germany, Germany and the German Democratic Republic won 13 of the 15 medals played in this discipline, but they did not win a single one in Sarajevo - the Italian became the champion, and the second and third places were taken by the Soviet luge (neither Danilin, before the last race, Dudin was not in the top three). The German from the GDR, Michael Walter , ended up in 4th place, lagging behind Dudin by 0.019 seconds. Another East German sleigh Torsten Görlitzer was in the lead after two races, but then rolled back to sixth place.
