Physical Properties

Thallium bromide forms light yellow crystals of cubic syngony , space group P m3m , cell parameters a = 0.3976 nm, Z = 1.

Slightly soluble in water, soluble in alcohol and ether .

Chemical Properties

  • Photosensitive, reversibly decomposes under the influence of light:
2TlBr←→hν2TlBrone-x+xBr2{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {2TlBr \ {\ stackrel {\ xrightarrow {h \ nu}} {\ xleftarrow [{\ \ \}] {}}} \ 2TlBr_ {1-x} + xBr_ {2}}}}
  • Decomposed by concentrated sulfuric acid:
TlBr+H2SOfour→TlHSOfour+HBr↑{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {TlBr + H_ {2} SO_ {4} \ {\ xrightarrow {}} \ TlHSO_ {4} + HBr \ uparrow}}}
  • It is restored by heating with hydrogen :
2TlBr+H2→T2Tl+2HBr{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {2TlBr + H_ {2} \ {\ xrightarrow {T}} \ 2Tl + 2HBr}}}

Application

  • Thallium bromide is used to separate thallium from industrial waste.
  • Ultrapure thallium bromide is used as a short-wave radiation detector.
