Biography

Kuzma Afanasyev was born in 1917 in the village of Staraya Tumba (now the Alkeevsky district of Tatarstan ) into a peasant family. He received his primary education , worked at the timber industry farm. In 1939 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since September 1941 - on the fronts of World War II. By October 1944, Sergeant Kuzma Afanasyev commanded the machine-gun department of the 795th Infantry Regiment of the 228th Infantry Division of the 53rd Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the battles for the liberation of Hungary [1] .

In October 1944, Afanasyev, with his branch, was the first in his company to enter the Tisza River north of the city of Szolnok in Hungary. Having captured two enemy pontoons, Afanasyev crossed to the opposite bank of the river and immediately entered the battle. The Afanasyev’s detachment destroyed the enemy infantry, numbering before the platoon , which facilitated the successful crossing of the company [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 24, 1945, Sergeant Kuzma Afanasyev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .

After the war, he was demobilized, returned to his homeland, worked as a manager at the timber industry farm. He died on December 20, 1966. [1]

He was also awarded a number of medals [1] .
